This Is How League Of Legends Pros Ascend Riot’s Ladder.

How Riot players get to the League of Legends pros.

Even professional League players must start somewhere. While many have been playing since the very first seasons, there are always new players.

These players are not able to make it to the professional ranks after they have played in college or the minors. Every League of Legends pro made it through the ladders to Master GrandMaster and Challenger, which are the most competitive final ranked levels.

LoL Ranking explained

You will often face an opponent in any other sport. In professional sports, you play against other teams and individuals who have earned their places as opponents. E-games should be no different. This is why there is a ranking system in a League of Legends.

Rankings allow players of equal ability to play against one another, rather than a more experienced player taking on someone new or an introductory player being outwitted immediately by a LoL champ.

League of Legends Tiers Vs. Divisions

LoL’s ranking system has nine tiers with a total of four divisions within each. A player who reaches 30 in League of Legends, and has 16 or more champs, is eligible to participate in league ranks placement games. A player is assigned a tier or division after a 10-game Provisional Series. It’s likely to be the Bronze or Silver Tier. However, it’s possible for a player to attain a Gold rank depending upon how many games they’ve won.

League of Legends Tiers

There are nine ranks in League of Legends: Iron, Bronze Silver, Gold and Platinum. Most LoL players are in the introductory tiers Iron, Bronze and Silver. This is because it’s difficult to rank higher in the game.

League of Legends Divisions

There are four divisions within each tier, with one representing the best. Your gameplay will determine which division you are in. The three final tiers, Master GrandMaster and Challenger, do not have a division.

You must win games in a best of series to move up the divisions and eventually among tiers. This is three games for division jumps and five for tier moves. This ranking system is often referred to as “LoL Ranking Ladder”.

Attaining the Master, GrandMaster and Challenger Tiers

All players who have fought their way through the previous divisions will be granted entry to the Master Tier. In 2014, Master was added to the game. This is the final hurdle that players must clear to reach the GrandMaster and Challenger tiers. GrandMaster was introduced in 2018 in order to address the disparity in skill levels Riot observed among its Master players.

Riot’s efforts to increase transparency in ranking standings has also been reflected by the addition of these two levels. Challenger hosts only the top 200 players from a given region. Players will move from Diamond I through Master and GrandMaster if they win their Promotion Series, rather than jumping directly into the top 200.

Players compete for total League points (LP) once they have reached Master tier. The player’s total League Points (LP) determines their rank in Master tiers. If they have a greater LP than them, Master and GrandMaster players can move up to the next tier. This allows top-tier players the ability to quickly see their position and determine how close they are to reaching that next level.

The big show is the Challenger Tier. This tier houses pros and aspiring pros. It includes a list of the top 200 League league players from each region. Reaching Challenger places a player on the radar. If a team is looking for a replacement or substitute, they will find them here.

Ranked teams work exactly the same way as solo players up until Challenger when there are only 50 spots. GrandMaster and Master are more stable places for pro teams to practice. Riot’s constant tweaks to pro game have resulted in the continuous improvement of the game. The Master and newly added GrandMaster Tier are no exception. Fans may begin to look to GrandMaster or Master to find their next favorite player, as news coverage is filled with pro retirements and shakeups.

LoL’s Ranking Distribution

League of Legend seasons are held once a year. They usually take place from January to December of the previous year. League of Legends publishes the ranking distribution of each tier before each season starts. Solo play:

  • Iron 7.1%
  • Bronze: 22%
  • Silver 35%
  • Gold: 23%
  • Platinum 7.9%
  • Diamond 2.5%
  • Master:.032%
  • GrandMaster:.040%
  • Challenger.017%

This distribution tends not to change year after year and most players will be able to attain a Bronze, Silver or Gold rank.

How LoL League Points work (LP)

League Points (or LP) are earned or lost based on ranked wins and losses. This amount is determined by the difficulty of opponents, the ranking of teammates and other factors. A player who has 100 LP in their respective division is automatically entered into a Promotion Series. Two wins will enable them to move up in one division. The same applies to teams. Players rely on LP to move up through the divisions and tiers. Individual rankings are not used to determine team placement.

The progression through the tiers is slightly different. Players must win at least three games or five to be eligible to move up to the next tier. To try and get into the lowest division of Gold Tier, players who earn 100 LP in Silver Division I will be eligible to participate in a five-game Tier Promotion Series. They will be promoted to the next tier if they win the series. If they lose, their LP will drop back to zero.

Although the ladder climb is easy, it can be strenuous and difficult. If a player’s LP falls to zero in a particular division, they will lose games and be demoted. Players may feel stuck in one division after a demotion.

After a player earns a Platinum tier place, they can become inactive and lose LP. A player who isn’t active for a long time will lose LP.

Matchmaking Rank (MMR), Explained

Riot assigns each player a Matchmaking Rank (MMR), which is determined by their skill level. It determines how much LP each player wins or loses. A player’s MMR is a measure of how likely they are to win in a victory and how much they can lose in a loss.

A player’s MMR can also be determined by their winning streak, the average MMR for their team and the MMR from the enemy. A player who has a higher MMR than their team will be awarded more LP for a win.

Solo vs. duo vs. flexible play

You have three options when you begin a League of Legends game. One is solo; two are duos. Three or more can play with you (flex). Your rank can vary depending on which option you choose. It’s important that you make the right decision based upon your preferred playing style.

Flex play is more for players who like working in teams, while solo and duo players are usually more interested in strategic gameplay that allows them move up in tiers or within divisions based upon their skill level.
